Information for foreign students

Dortmund: The City

Did you know that Dortmund is already 1100 years old? Today, Dortmund has almost 600,000 inhabitants. It is located at the east side of the “Ruhrgebiet”, a metropolitan area with about 18 million inhabitants. In the past, Dortmund’s economy lived on coal, beer and steel industries. Apart from this industrial key sector, Dortmund is a center for technology and service industries today. If you want to know more about Dortmund - you can find lots of information here:

Dortmund is a very interesting city filled with a rich history and unique culture all of its own. The tourist information center across the street from the main entrance of the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) offers useful information about Dortmund and the area. Application for Admission

To start a degree program at TU Dortmund University prospective international students first have to apply for admission. Application desdlines are: Juli 15th for the following winter semester January 15th for the following summer semester

By these dates, the application form and all necessary documents have to be on hand the the Akademisches Auslandsamt ( Office of International Relations) of TU Dortmund Univesity. Applications with a universitry receipt stamp past those dates cannot be considered. Up-to-date information and the application form is available at:

German language Proficiency

Prior to admission into a degree program, you have to take the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang DSH (German language examination for university admission). To get enrolled you will have to achieve DSH 2.

DSH equivalents include:

  • Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung, ZOP (Goethe Institute)
  • Sprachdiplom der Stufe 2 (German embassy)
  • Kleines deutsches Sprachdiplom
  • Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestDaF): at least level 4 in all test sections
